ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Some hardworking students in the Allentown School District received a major honor Wednesday: Four-year scholarships to Kutztown University.
13 students, nine from Louis E. Dieruff High School and four from Allen High School, were surprised with the Board of Governors scholarship. The honor goes to high school students who excel academically.
“We have a select number of students who received our top scholarship, the Board of Governors scholarship. The scholarship is a full tuition scholarship. It covers the amount of tuition for the four years that they will be a student at Kutztown University,” said Genaro Robles, Asst. Dir. Of Admissions for Spanish/Latino Recruitment at Kutztown University.
For Genaro Robles, presenting such an honor on behalf of Kutztown University is a full circle moment. Robles graduated from the Allentown School District.
“Kind of seeing, ushering, guiding the next generation of students coming through. It’s a long, daunting road really choosing a college, applying. Especially if you’re first generation and haven’t done it before and there’s nobody really to guide you,” Robles said.
Loreline Carmonoa is a senior at Dieruff and will be a first-generation college student.
“I’m so happy, I’m so excited and I’m so grateful. I knew that I wanted to go to college. That was my objective,” Carmonoa said.
She plans to study business administration.
Leonor Castillo was shocked upon learning that her daughter Ellie Perez was awarded the Board of Governors scholarship at Allen High School.
“I can’t believe it. I think it’s very, very nice from the university to give this kind of help to students who work hard during the year and Eileen did very well in school. I’m very, very happy and feel emotional right now,” Castillo stated.
Castillo told us her daughter plans to major in psychology.
“She would like to work for, helping kids who are dealing with the pressure of society, and she would like to pursue that,” Castillo said.
Other schools in the region with students who received the BOG scholarship are:
Northampton County
Easton Area High School
Wilson Area High School
Liberty High School
Freedom High School
Lehigh County
Louis E. Dieruff High School
William Allen High School
Executive Academy Charter School
Roberto Clemente Charter School
Innovative Arts Academy
Berks County
Reading Senior High School
Muhlenberg High School
The Board of Governors Scholarship covers four years of tuition fees. It does not include housing and meals.
