KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Orange and white balloons swayed above the stage. A sign proudly declared “UT Hearts Fulton,” with an orange heart emoji. A crowd of expectant students clutched orange and white pom-poms.
This was the scene Monday when the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, surprised 14 seniors from Fulton High School with scholarships and admissions offers.
Operation Honor Guard: Where to give
When combined with Tennessee’s HOPE Scholarship, this will completely cover all the recipients’ tuition and mandatory fees for eight semesters each. This is part of UT’s Flagship Scholarship, which awards graduates from one of 52 designated high schools across Tennessee.
One-by-one, the students had their names called and walked on stage to the applause of their peers.
6 News spoke to scholarship winner Jeremias Domingo-José, who said he had no idea beforehand that he would be awarded. He and his family expressed their gratitude to UT. Domingo-José plans to major in mechanical engineering.
“We had to work hard just to keep my grades up. I had to study a lot, do a lot of homework, but it pays off, though,” he said. “We don’t have to go into debt. We don’t have to worry about budgeting or not getting things like cars or paying the mortgage. We don’t have to worry about that as much.”
