Two Alexander Central cheerleaders won scholarships at the NCHSAA 2024 Cheerleading Invitational on Dec. 7.
Alexander Central seniors Reese Buff and Liz Cornett were awarded with the scholarships at the event.
The scholarships are provided by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and its partner Cheersounds. They are given to recognize and reward outstanding cheerleaders who exemplify “sound character and academic standing, good sportsmanship and school spirit,” according to the NCHSAA’s website. The NCHSAA gave out eight scholarships during the tournament, each in the amount of $500.
Buff’s leadership talents stretch far beyond cheer. She has organized care packages for nursing homes and delivered meals and Christmas gifts. She has also coordinated career labs and a 5K race.
Over the years, Cornett has coached young athletes and organized cheer camps. She also helped mobilize her team to get involved in relief efforts after Hurricane Helene this fall.
The Cougars took first-place in the Division I, large, game day, non-tumbling category on Saturday. The team previously had earned a bid to nationals in a regional competition last month. Nationals will be in Orlando in February.
South Caldwell took third-place in the small game day non-tumbling category. The Spartans also already earned their trip to nationals at a regional competition last month.
Bunker Hill took second in the Division II small performance non-tumbling category. Maiden got first-place in medium performance non-tumbling.
