The first cohort of master’s students from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) to receive scholarships under the collaboration with Lucy Cavendish College and Newnham College at the University of Cambridge is getting ready for a unique academic experience at Cambridge at the start of the 2025/26 academic year.
These outstanding CityUHK students have been encouraged to pursue master’s degrees at Cambridge through the comprehensive partnership established between the two universities.
Global academic connections
Receiving the scholarship was extremely significant, said Luo Zhihao, who recently completed his Bachelor of Science in Physics at CityUHK, in part because his academic journey has not always been smooth, particularly in the early years. However, his mentor, Professor Zhang Ruiqin from the Department of Physics at CityUHK, and his own persistence and self-reflection reignited his passion and clarified his purpose for learning.
Zhihao says his own beliefs resonate strongly with the philosophy that “students gain not only a degree but also a holistic education” at CityUHK and that seizing opportunities while young and avoiding self-imposed restrictions are very important.
He will pursue a one-year MPhil by Research in Materials Science at Cambridge starting this Autumn, followed by a four-year PhD in Physics at CityUHK under the joint supervision of Professor Zhang and Professor Manish Chhowalla from Cambridge’s Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. Zhihao looks forward to deepening his understanding of international research and knowledge transfer while building global academic connections. In the long term, he hopes to return to CityUHK as a professor and entrepreneur, contributing his knowledge and experience to his alma mater.
Carol Wong Wai-kun, a CityUHK graduate with a Master of Science in Energy and Environment, was the first student to receive a CityUHK Research Master Scholarship Programme for Newnham College. She admitted that while she had always planned to pursue further studies in energy and engineering, studying at Cambridge seemed unattainable. Thus, she was delighted to be awarded a scholarship.
Carol hopes that collaborating with scholars and researchers from diverse backgrounds will help to spark innovative ideas in sustainable development and climate change research. She noted that CityUHK’s leading research in energy and engineering in Hong Kong and globally has equipped her well for her future studies. She will pursue a Research Master degree under the joint supervision of Professor Steven Wang from CityUHK’s School of Energy and Environment and Professor Teng Long from Cambridge’s Department of Engineering.
Intellectual exchange
Jacqueline Guico, who completed her Bachelor of Arts in English at CityUHK in 2023, was among the first cohort of undergraduates affected by the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on university life. Reflecting on her experience, she noted that many overseas exchange opportunities were cancelled at the time. Therefore, embarking on her first study abroad experience in the UK was a welcome surprise.
Despite the pressure of preparing the necessary documents for her first overseas study experience, Jacqueline could not conceal her excitement when discussing her upcoming MPhil in Digital Humanities at the University of Cambridge. She said that Hong Kong’s international environment had alleviated her anxieties and that she felt grateful and thrilled for this opportunity. She believes the intellectual exchange at Cambridge will help her develop a better version of herself.
Wei He, who completed her Master of Science in Digital Transformation and Technological Innovation at CityUHK, will head to Cambridge in September to pursue an MPhil in Technology Policy. She was immensely surprised and honoured to be among the first cohort of students awarded one of these CityUHK-Cambridge scholarships. She thanked CityUHK for providing her with an invaluable opportunity to experience the unique academic atmosphere at Cambridge.
She is also very excited about studying in Cambridge University’s prestigious libraries, and she looks forward to engaging in academic exchanges with renowned professors from around the world and connecting with outstanding students from diverse fields.
CityUHK international environment supports students in embarking on their educational journey
Cai Yuzhi, who grew up in mainland China, will embark on a new chapter by pursuing an MPhil in Real Estate Finance at Cambridge, following his Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance at CityUHK. Yuzhi chose to pursue undergraduate education in Hong Kong because of the city’s international environment. During his four years at CityUHK, he was greatly inspired by professors and peers from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds. He recalled how wide-ranging, in-depth discussions with dormitory friends from Poland, the UK, and other places sparked in him a passion for exploring the world.
Upon learning that he had been awarded the CityUHK-Cambridge, Yuzhi felt immensely honoured. He recognised that the close collaboration between the two universities highlighted CityUHK’s academic standing and influence on the global stage. This growing reputation, he said, motivated students to study diligently and broaden their knowledge boundaries.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from CityUHK four years ago, Fan Pui-kwan joined an international accounting firm as an auditor. In recent years, she transitioned into sustainable finance consultancy and sought opportunities for further studies. The scholarship has enabled her to embark on a significant journey to pursue a Master of Finance at Cambridge, an opportunity she considers a great honour.
She said the UK was at the forefront of sustainable finance development, and she believes that Cambridge provides an ideal platform for deepening her professional knowledge and solidifying her career direction. She also hopes to expand her network and broaden her perspectives through this study abroad experience.
Leung Ying-ka, a graduate of the Juris Doctor programme at CityUHK, was really happy to receive a scholarship since it would alleviate his financial burden and serve as a milestone moment to share with his family and friends.
Having previously studied in the US and UK, he said CityUHK’s curriculum stands out for its emphasis on group projects and has helped him develop the strong interpersonal and communication skills needed for postgraduate studies abroad. After completing his Master of Laws at Cambridge, he plans to pursue professional legal qualifications in Hong Kong.
Broadening global perspectives
The aim of the scholarship programmes launched with the University of Cambridge is to offer elite students invaluable study abroad opportunities that will broaden their international outlook. The CityUHK-Lucy Cavendish College Scholarship programme, starting in the 2025/26 academic year, will support up to 20 students annually to pursue master’s degrees at Cambridge. Each recipient will receive a full scholarship covering a one-year, full-time master’s programme.
In addition, the CityUHK Research Master Scholarship at Newnham College will fund two female CityUHK Research Master students per year to study at Newnham College. The students will subsequently return to CityUHK to pursue doctoral degree programmes under the joint supervision of CityUHK and University of Cambridge scholars.
Beyond these two scholarship programmes, CityUHK has partnered with the Cambridge Judge Business School, the Cambridge School of Arts and Humanities, and Lucy Cavendish College to launch scholarship programmes for students pursuing a Master of Finance, a Master of Philosophy in the Digital Humanities and a Research Master, respectively. These initiatives provide CityUHK students with diverse scholarship opportunities tailored to their academic needs.
