Creighton’s Greg McDermott press conference after Creighton victory over Villanova.
Shane Thomas had a special present under the tree on Christmas.
Wednesday morning, Creighton coach Greg McDermott shared a video to social media of Thomas, a redshirt freshman guard, receiving a scholarship after spending his first season-plus with the program as a walk-on.
“Wait a minute,” Thomas said, reading a piece of paper. “What is this?”
“What’s it say?” someone asked.
“Full grant and aid, spring 2025,” Thomas continued. “I think it’s a scholarship!”
After stepping up through the first six weeks of this season, that’s exactly what it was.
Thomas, who McDermott was optimistic about early in the summer, went from playing limited minutes early to a significant part in the Jays’ depleted backcourt. He’s taken a sizable leap, particularly as a defender.
The Las Vegas native gives CU 10 scholarship players available after losing Pop Isaacs, who had season-ending hip surgery, and Sterling Knox and Larry Johnson, who both decided to leave the program.
Creighton has 10 days between Saturday’s win over Villanova and a New Year’s Eve matchup with St. John’s at home.
