VALDOSTA – The Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Section of National Council of Negro Women recently elected its Sections 2018-20 executive board officers.
The national organization was founded by the late Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune on Dec. 5, 1935. Locally, the section was founded Aug. 3, 2011, and has successfully implemented various community initiatives and activities for families, young people and adults, according to members.
The newly elected officers are President Dr. Jamie Hill, First Vice President Karla Walker, Second Vice President Brandy King, Treasurer Dr. Beverley Richardson-Blake, Recording Secretary Dr. Elena Ponder, Corresponding Secretary Anya Brown and Financial Secretary Katrina Royal, according to members.
Tiffany Vinson served as the 2016-18 section president. During her term, the section was able to provide scholarships to high school students through the section’s annual mother-daughter brunch. Vinson also led the charge in the section serving as the hosting section of the annual state conference in Valdosta last August.
Since its founding locally, NCNW has implemented a community-wide family reunion where vendors, families and youth can see live entertainment, free health screenings, free groceries and resources; annual educational initiatives for students in K-5; giving back to area homeless students through both Lowndes and Valdosta school districts; the Bethune leadership banquet, recognizing women making positive imprints in the community who are in high school, college and older than the age of 25; annual SELFIE Conference that tailors to entrepreneurship tools and resources for women from high school to young adults, Adopt-A-Road clean ups, Back to school health fair extravaganza in collaboration with local organizations and churches; annual mother-daughter brunch, etc.
