BEAVER DAM, Ky. (WBKO) -A longstanding tradition at Ohio County High School has been to hold a talent show on the last day of school before winter break.
According to OCHS student, Drake Bradley, it’s one of the best days of the year.
“It’s great because the last semester has been really stressful, so just having the time to just have fun and be together is great,” Bradley said.
This year the show has added a new element in the form of a scholarship given to the winners.
The new addition comes courtesy of the family of Colt Rickard, a former Ohio County High School student who tragically passed away in January of 2024 from a fatal car accident.
“This year was based solely on donations from other people. We just could not do a fundraiser this year, but my goal this year was to give a scholarship award to one child, and with the donations that we have gotten I’m able to give out three scholarship awards today,” explained Rickard’s mother, Aleatha Fuqua.
$800 was collected for the Colt Rickard Scholarship for its inaugural year with the winners chosen by a panel of judges, which included the band Ole 60, and Rickard’s mother.
“It’s very exciting. I’m not a crier and I have cried all year this year,” she said. “I always told my kids I don’t care what you do in life, I don’t care where you go, who you do it with, be a good human … and my kid did that. I think he would love this. I think he’s probably here going ‘Woo mom!’”
Jasper Betty took home the top prize at this year’s show, winning $350.
The band, Turn and Burn, took second place, winning $250.
Black Iron won third place and took home $100.
