WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Paying for college is not easy or cheap, so for the first time, a program in North Central Wisconsin is offering graduating seniors an opportunity to apply for a brand new scholarship.
Junior Achievement (JA) of Wisconsin is a program that teaches high school students about financial leadership.
The non-profit organization recently announced it is offering five $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors in Marathon County as part of the nonprofit’s mission to inspire and prepare Wisconsin youth for economic and career success as adults.
“We have been very fortunate in the Wausau community to have a lot of support from businesses and foundations,” said Lisa Maahs, who is the Regional Director for Junior Achievement of Wisconsin’s Northcentral Wisconsin Region.
“This has put us in a position where we are able to offer these scholarships.”
According to the organization, the money can be credited to any accredited post-secondary educational institution, including trade and technical schools.
To qualify for the scholarships, applicants must be a 2026 graduating senior and have a JA high school program or taught at least two JA elementary programs during their high school years. Those who have attended a JA program, such as the JA’s annual Titan business challenge, are also invited to apply.
“You can contact Junior Achievement here in Wausau. We do over 200 elementary classes in the Wausau area, and most of them are in the Spring, so if you are a high school senior and you want to apply for this, but you haven’t had any competition experience, you can still qualify,” said Maahs.
To apply, applicants must write a short essay about one thing they learned in their JA program and how it has impacted their potential future career choice. They must also submit a resume and two letters of recommendation. They can turn those materials to Maahs by phone at (715) 842-1056 or email.
The deadline to apply is March 31st.
