First-Generation Student Scholarship Feature: Yousf Sheikh, Illinois ’27 – Phi Delta Theta

As a first-generation college student, navigating higher education comes with unique challenges—but also incredible rewards. For this University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign student, the Phi Delta Theta First-Generation Scholarship has made a meaningful difference, helping ease financial pressures and allowing him to focus on what truly matters: learning, growing, and making the most of his college experience.
Currently a junior majoring in economics with a minor in chemistry, he hopes to use his education to make a lasting impact in the financial services industry. This past summer, he interned with Wintrust Financial in their Customer Contact Center, where he developed valuable client service and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced banking environment. In the short term, he plans to continue building his experience in financial services, particularly in investment management or client advisory, with long-term aspirations of helping individuals and institutions make thoughtful, informed financial decisions.
“Receiving this scholarship has had a real impact on both my education and my peace of mind,” he shared. “It helps relieve some of the financial burden and allows me to focus more on learning, growing, and pursuing meaningful opportunities. More importantly, it’s a reminder that my hard work is seen and supported.”
Phi Delta Theta has also played a defining role in his college journey. “The brotherhood has shaped me into a more confident, accountable, and service-minded person,” he said. “I’ve benefited immensely from our alumni network—whether it’s résumé reviews, career advice, or professional connections, their support has helped me think bigger about what’s possible.”
Like many first-generation students, his path hasn’t been without its challenges. “During my sophomore year, I was juggling academic pressure, career decisions, and responsibilities at home. It was overwhelming at times,” he recalled. “But Phi Delt gave me the support system I needed. The chapter helped me stay grounded, reminded me of my potential, and surrounded me with people who truly cared about seeing me succeed. That’s why I stayed. This isn’t just a fraternity to me—it’s family.”
He expresses deep gratitude to the donors and supporters who make the First-Generation Scholarship possible: “Knowing that I have this support behind me only strengthens my commitment to working hard and making the most of every opportunity. I’m truly grateful for the generosity that allows students like me to thrive and for the chance to uphold the values of Phi Delta Theta in all that I do.”
