BROWNSVILLE, TX —The TSC Foundation formally presented Texas Southmost College with a $650,000 check at a board meeting on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024, at the TSC campus’ historic Gorgas Hall. The funds from the award will be used to provide scholarships to qualifying students, helping to ensure that those who wish to attend college have ample opportunities to pursue their education at TSC.
“This donation is a monumental occasion for both Texas Southmost College and the TSC Foundation,” said Adela G. Garza, Chair of the TSC Board of Trustees, and Vice-Chair of the TSC Foundation. “The scholarships that will be awarded because of these funds will open countless doors for people who are eager to pursue their higher education or train for a career that they have always wanted. In essence, these scholarships are investments in the hopes and dreams of ambitious individuals who will be able to create their own pathways to fulfilling futures for themselves, their families, and the communities in which they live.”
As a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation governed by a local volunteer board, the TSC Foundation invests an incredible amount of time, effort, and funds in order to uphold its mission for the benefit of the community which it serves.
“The mission of the Texas Southmost College Foundation is to transform students’ lives by providing equal opportunities for students to access a quality and affordable college education,” said TSC Foundation Chairman Roy De los Santos. “The Foundation supports the college and its students in the attainment of their educational goals by providing support for student scholarships, academic instruction, and instructional support for students.”
The donation of funds and creation of new scholarship opportunities is another strong affirmation of the foundation’s commitment to giving back to the community which it serves. To De los Santos, it’s a mission he is particularly passionate about due to his history with the college and the spirit of altruism developed while there.
“I am a former student body president at Texas Southmost College during the UT Brownsville | Texas Southmost College partnership era,” said De los Santos. “Since attending, I have given years of service to nonprofit causes in our community. Wherever I feel I’m able to make a great contribution and make a difference, I’m willing to serve.”
In many cases, scholarships make a significant difference to aspiring students, many of whom in the south Texas region come from financially underprivileged backgrounds but have demonstrated both the aptitude and determination to enroll in college. With tuition covered, scholarship recipients can focus on their studies and keep their educational goals steadily in sight.
Additionally, the Foundation has always had its eye on the roles that individuals will take once they graduate, moving from the classroom into the workforce. Careful consideration is taken in order to ensure that the skills students learn in college are in parity with those sought by employers from many different businesses and industries, especially those which are still emerging.
“Today’s workforce is highly competitive and requires college graduates trained to enter a high-tech workforce and global economy. It is important that TSC’s students participate in cutting-edge programs in top-notch facilities, therefore the TSC Foundation collaborates with TSC to meet the needs of the students, families, and employers TSC serves. The TSC Foundation seeks partners among businesses, foundations, and individuals who understand the transformational value of a Texas Southmost College education and are willing to invest in that work.”
Above all else, there is a steadfast assurance that those who contribute to the TSC Foundation are contributing to a vast array of initiatives which ultimately go toward creating lasting positive impacts.
“Investments in the Texas Southmost College Foundation support economic development, workforce development, and the community’s quality of life. Through the generous support of alumni, parents, and friends, TSC is able to continue its legacy of excellence by providing quality education and opportunities for all students.
By making a gift to TSC, donors are investing in the lives of current students and future leaders.”
Ultimately, the driving force behind the Foundation has always been inextricably linked with its overall goal: to give back to the community which it serves in ways that inspire positive change in the people and communities which it serves.
“Our responsibility is clear, we are here to serve Texas Southmost College and its students. That the youth are our future, I think is what motivates us the most because we know the cause we have chosen to undertake is an incredibly worthy one,” stated De los Santos. “It not only serves the community from the perspective of providing an educated workforce that is needed, and an education to students thirsty for knowledge, but it likewise contributes to the quality of life in south Texas, making the community a much better place.”
