The $30,000 scholarship is awarded to three graduating high school students in the Greater Houston Area who plan to attend a Texas college or university each year.
Fulshear graduate Jessica Bilewski is one of three incoming college freshmen awarded $10,000 over the next four years to assist in their undergraduate studies through the Houston Marathon Foundation.
The Houston Marathon Foundation Scholarship is designed for high-achieving high school seniors who demonstrate leadership, generosity, and a strong volunteer spirit.
This scholarship is offered to three graduating high school students from the Greater Houston Area who plan to attend a Texas college or university each year. Recipients must show a passion for running, community involvement, and excellent academic performance. The scholarship provides $2,500 annually, totaling $10,000 over four years.
Bilewski had to submit an application including a short essay, all of her high school achievements, volunteer work, transcript, and other information sources allowing the organization to chose the right candidate for this scholarship.
The recent Fulshear High School graduate, will study chemical engineering at Texas A&M. Bilewski earned a four-year varsity letter in cross country with Fulshear High School.
Her notable achievements include:
Varsity positions in cross country and track.
Serving as Medical Terminology Class President.
Participating in various clubs, including volunteering as a Traditional Polish dance performer.
“After the application process, I was notified that I was put into the next round of the application process which included a virtual interview,” Bilewski said. “I was able to speak about my running career since middle school and answer any other questions they may have had for me. Then, I found out I was one of the winners, which included being on ABC13 and meeting those who gave me this amazing opportunity.”
Her commitment to her sport and community made her a deserving recipient of this scholarship.
“Running is hard, but that’s the fun part because you get better by pushing your limits,” Bilewski said. “It makes me feel proud when I overcome any obstacle. This scholarship and running will help me persevere through the challenges ahead.”
Townes Pressler, the newly appointed Houston Marathon Foundation Board of Directors president, expressed his excitement.
“I’m enthusiastic about the Houston Marathon Foundation Scholarship award because it rewards leadership, determination, drive, academic achievement, and a serious commitment to competitive running,” Pressler said. “I strongly believe in the sport of running as a promoter of a healthy lifestyle, and encouraging young people in the sport can be a lifetime game changer.”
Though she will continue to run on her own time, Bilewski will not be competing for Texas A&M.
Other awardees include James Hayden Price from Bridgeland High School and Alexandra Maglaras from Bellaire High School.
For students interested in applying for the HMF scholarship next year, the application process will open on Sept. 3 and close on March 30, 2025. More information about the HMF scholarships and other HMF initiatives can be found at www.chevronhoustonmarathon.com/foundation.
