Gujarat: ABVP members stage protest against ST scholarships being scrapped for management-quota students – The Indian Express

Demanding that the decision to scrap ST scholarships for management-quota students be withdrawn, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest outside Birsa Munda Bhawan in Gandhinagar on Thursday.
The student organisation also submitted a representation to Minister for Tribal Development, Kuber Dindor, detailing their demand.
The state tribal development department had issued a notification on October 28 declaring that students admitted under the management quota will be ineligible for the post matric-scholarship for ST (Scheduled Tribes) candidates.
“The notification should be cancelled. Also, existing students under management quota should be authorised for the scholarship till they complete their education and admission given to students on the vacant seats be considered as state quota,” the ABVP demanded in its representation.
The state government’s tribal development department had issued a notification for post-matric scholarship following revised guidelines from the central government in this regard. Earlier, scholarships were offered to students of both free and paid seats.
“The guidelines were revised after several discrepancies were detected among beneficiaries of this scheme. The government is not declining scholarship but (giving it) to only genuine students. Several cases, a majority in Mehsana, Patan and Banaskantha districts, came to light where entire colleges were filled with tribal students. This is a question of preventing actual tribal students from receiving this financial assistance. This (scholarship) will be offered to only merit-based students and not ghost or missing students where colleges are siphoning these funds in the name of such students,” a senior government official told The Indian Express.
As per the central government’s revised guidelines for post-matric scheme, scholarship has been scrapped for students on management quota for the academic year 2024-25.
The notification further clarified that government quota seats that are converted to management quota seats after falling vacant will also not be eligible for the scholarship.
