The Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) has announced the allocation of $6 million in scholarships to support the Olympic qualification efforts of five track and field athletes for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
This initiative is part of the JOA’s commitment to fostering athletic excellence and providing financial support to Jamaica’s aspiring Olympians.
The scholarship recipients include: Shaneika Ricketts – triple jumper; Malik James-King – 400m hurdler; Christoff Bryan – high jumper; Samantha Hall – discus thrower; Nyoka Clunis – hammer thrower.
This announcement comes three months after Nyoka Clunis launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $15,000 for her preparation for Paris, having so far raised $1,550 from 28 donors. Last year, Clunis made history as the first Jamaican to compete in the hammer throw at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
“The JOA scholarship program serves as one of our legacy objectives,” said Ryan Foster, JOA’s secretary-general and CEO, during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games media launch at the Terra Nova Hotel. “We want to leave a legacy for our members and an initiative that advances our athlete-first perspective. We believe in the future of our athletes, and we have focused on objectives that are not just event-specific or aligned to a game, but ones that will have a far-reaching impact on the lives of our athletes and administrators.”
The JOA noted that this scholarship program complements the Olympic solidarity scholarships, which have provided over US$300,000 to eight athletes since 2021. Additionally, the JOA has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to three other athletes and implemented a $6 million coaching scholarship.
The JOA’s continued investment in athletes’ development underscores its commitment to ensuring that Jamaican athletes are well-prepared and supported on their journey to Olympic success. These scholarships are intended to alleviate the financial burden on athletes, allowing them to focus on their training and competition preparations.
