State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette, center right) presents a $1,000 scholarship to Alonso Clawson-Smith and his parents during the Hoops Classic Basketball Tournament.
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Lafayette Jefferson High School senior Alonso Clawson-Smith was awarded the Sen. Ron Alting Scholarship during this year’s IU Health Hoops Classic Basketball tournament.
“As someone who had to work two jobs in college, I know it is often difficult to pay for a post-secondary education,” Alting said.
“I believe it is important for young people to achieve some form of education beyond a high school diploma. I created this scholarship so deserving students can focus more on studying and less on how they will pay for their education.”
The scholarship can help pay for any post-secondary education activity, whether that be a college or university, vocational program or trade school.
“Alonso is a wonderful young man and great student athlete who has shown a lot of potential through his dedication, hard work and sportsmanship,” Alting said. “I am pleased to see such a deserving student receive this scholarship and look forward to seeing what is in his future.”
The recipient of the scholarship is selected by coaches who participate in the Hoops Classic Basketball Tournament.
