MPOWER Financing has launched a new non-profit scholarship for refugee and international students who wish to study in the US or Canada
MPOWER Financing has unveiled its latest initiative – the Global Citizens Fund.
This new scholarship fund is aimed at supporting refugee, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and international students seeking educational opportunities in the US and Canada.
The fund includes one scholarship of USD$10,000 and two smaller scholarships of USD$2,000 each. To qualify, applicants must be accepted or enrolled in a full-time degree programme at an MPOWER-supported school and legally allowed to study in the US or Canada.
Students can spend the award on whatever they need for university. Whether that is books, living expenses, or even just put it towards their tuition, it’s up to them.
The scholarship is open to DACA (Deferred action for childhood arrivals) students or anyone who is an international student due to study in the US or Canada and is therefore not merit-based.
Eligibility criteria for US study include having a valid study visa, being protected under DACA, or holding US permanent residency (green card). For study in Canada, applicants should be Canadian permanent residents or have a valid Canadian study permit. The application deadline for these scholarships is 31 October 2023.
Applicants for the MPOWER Global Citizen Scholarship do not have to be MPOWER borrowers or applicants. As long as they meet the eligibility criteria explained above, they are eligible to apply.

How much does it cost to study in the United States?
The MPOWER Global Citizen Scholarship winners will be chosen based on their essay submissions. The judges will consider each entry for clarity of thought, compelling goals and capability in English communication. They also want to see how much the applicant’s intended field of study aligns with their aspirations, proving a strong connection between the two.
MPOWER is looking for individuals with promising potential as scientists, entrepreneurs, leaders and change-makers who can bring about positive impact. The selection process will be comprehensive, and successful applicants will be notified of their status within eight weeks of the application deadline.
The scholarship fund will continue MPOWER’s earlier work to support refugees and asylum seekers through education financing. Eligible students will be able to apply for scholarships to attend one of more than 400 colleges and universities across the US and Canada.
MPOWER is a socially driven financial services company founded in 2014 to support international students in pursuing their dreams of studying abroad. They offer loans and scholarships based on a student’s future potential rather than past financial history. They have helped thousands of students worldwide, enabling access to education for first-generation college students and those in STEM fields.
The company collaborates with more than 400 top universities in the US and Canada to offer financing options to students from over 200 countries. MPOWER also offers personal financial education and career support to prepare students for life after graduation.
Students who would like to apply for scholarships or loans with MPOWER can explore all the available opportunities on the Global Citizens Fund’s website. Equally, anyone who would like to donate to the scholarship fund can contact inquiries@globalcitizensfund.org.
