Among several area winners were Jaden Fear of NorthWood High School, one of three students who won a Lilly scholarship, and Mariah Beachey of Fairfield High School, one of five students who won a Gundlach scholarship.
A Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides
for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network, which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana and Indiana Humanities.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character and leadership. “This year’s applicants were a strong group and the volunteers and staff who interviewed finalists were greatly impressed,” said Guy Fisher, chief program officer for the Community Foundation.
Each eligible Elkhart County high school nominates one senior student based on academic performance (including grades and course load), extracurricular and civic involvement, work experience, career goals, special circumstances, interview and an essay. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.
The Guy David Gundlach Memorial Scholarship provides $5,000 per year for four years to any accredited Indiana college or university. This memorial scholarship is one of the many initiatives established due to Gundlach’s gift in 2011. Since the inception of the scholarship, 63 Elkhart County students have received this $20,000 award.
The Community Foundation awards more than $2 million in scholarships annually. Its Universal Application for high school and adult students unlocks consideration for more than 30 different scholarships. That application opens January 1 and is due by March 1.
