This was a big day for some high schoolers in southern Illinois.
34 high achieving high school seniors received Southern Illinois University Carbondale 2025 Chancellor’s Scholarships, which cover tuition, mandatory fees, on-campus housing and food for four years.
Chancellor Austin Lane and other university officials paid surprise visits the past two days to present the scholarships and congratulate 31 students from 20 high schools in the southern Illinois and Metro East regions. The remaining scholarship recipients learned of their awards during a Zoom session Tuesday afternoon.
Scholarships went to students in Carbondale, Carterville, Du Quoin, Herrin, Marion, Murphysboro, Anna-Jonesboro, Johnston City and a dozen more.
More than 600 high school students competed in the selection process.
The award is renewable for three years, contingent upon the students maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA.
