UBC goaltender Cole Schwebius named WHL Grad of the Month for November – Canada West

Third year backstop recorded perfect 6-0 record in November

Dec. 12, 2024 – UBC goaltender Cole Schwebius has been named the conference's Western Hockey League Grad of the Month for November.
The third year backstop from Kelowna, B.C. enjoyed a stellar month while surrendering just eight goals in six starts, all victories. He recorded a sparkling .938 save percentage and a 1.33 goals against average over that span, including turning aside 19 shots in a 3-0 shutout on Nov. 16 against West Division rival Calgary.
His impressive play also included a pair of key road wins over Mount Royal on Nov. 8 and 9.
The former Kelowna Rockets and Seattle Thunderbirds netminder has been a revelation since joining the Thunderbirds prior to the 2022-23 season. After a solid rookie campaign, he took full control of the T-Birds crease last season and proceeded to lead the team to a historic championship run, helping UBC capture their first conference championship in program history.
Schwebius and the Thunderbirds have hit their stride again this season as they look to defend their conference crown. The team enters the holiday break in first place in the highly competitive West Division with a 12-5 record, ending the semester on an eight game win streak. Schwebius has once again been key to his team's success, sporting an 8-2-0-1 overall record to pair with a .913 save percentage.
It's been an impressive transition to the university game for Schwebius, who played parts of four seasons in the WHL with Seattle and Kelowna. In 48 career WHL games, he recorded an .890 save percentage and compiled a 17-23-2 record.
Schwebius is currently a Sauder School of Business student who is utilizing his WHL Scholarship to attend the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He has excelled both on the ice and in the classroom during his time at UBC, earning U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian honours in each of the past two seasons.
For each season played in the WHL, a player is awarded with a one-year post-secondary scholarship, which includes tuition, compulsory fees, and required textbooks. In partnership with Canada West universities, numerous WHL Scholarship recipients each year are also awarded additional financial assistance from their university to receive Western Canada’s Premier Hockey Scholarship.
Since 1993, the WHL has awarded nearly 8,000 scholarships to graduate players. The WHL is the leading supplier of hockey scholarships in Western Canada and offers one of the most comprehensive scholarships in North America.
