LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Three UNLV students were awarded memorial scholarships in honor of the three professors killed in the Dec. 6 shooting.
That day, a shooter entered Beam Hall and took the lives of three professors: Patricia Navarro Velez; Jerry Cha-Jan Chang of Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Department; and Naoko Takemaru of World Languages and Cultures.
The students were each awarded scholarships corresponding to each professor’s area of expertise.
Sonia Plascencia Zacarias, a master’s accounting student, received a scholarship honoring Dr. Navarro, who she says inspired her to get her master’s.
Mark Robles, a senior Information Systems major, received a scholarship honor Professor Chang. He adds that he’s honored to carry his name in the final leg of his UNLV career.
Kayla Cromwell, a senior majoring in English with a minor in Japanese, was awarded a scholarship honoring Dr. Takemaru. She added that the last email she’d received from Takemaru was about a book she’d recently published.
The scholarships were funded by “an outpouring of private donations exceeding $264,000,” according to UNLV.
