Why travel scholarships matter to the hemophilia B community – Hemophilia News Today

Your presence at the 2025 symposium could make a difference
by Jennifer Lynne |
Last April, I had the privilege of attending the Coalition for Hemophilia B’s annual symposium in Dallas for the first time. It was a transformative experience filled with educational sessions, meaningful social connections, and a shared passion for advancing care within the hemophilia B community. The event brought together individuals of all ages, united by a common purpose: to learn, connect, and inspire one another.
The next Coalition for Hemophilia B Symposium will take place April 10-13, 2025, in Orlando, Florida, a particularly special year as the organization celebrates its 35th anniversary.
For many families, the financial burden of traveling to attend such events can feel overwhelming. To address this challenge, the Coalition for Hemophilia B offers travel scholarships to ensure participation is accessible to everyone. These grants are more than just financial assistance — they represent an opportunity for families to connect with others, gain valuable insights into the latest treatments, and advocate for improved care within the community. By providing this support, the coalition helps break down barriers, fostering inclusion, and strengthening the bonds within the hemophilia B community.
When I attended the symposium, I connected deeply with other attendees and found camaraderie within the community. However, I also discovered an unexpected connection in an unlikely place.
During an Uber ride in Dallas, my driver casually asked why I was in town. I hesitated before sharing that I was attending a conference for people affected by hemophilia B. To my surprise, he revealed that he, too, had a bleeding disorder — factor VII deficiency. Originally from Afghanistan, he had moved to the U.S. 40 years ago, at the age of 19, and discovered his diagnosis after seeking medical help for persistent bleeding problems.
This unexpected conversation reminded me of how widespread and diverse the bleeding disorders community truly is, transcending borders and backgrounds. It reinforced the value of sharing our experiences, as we never know who might relate or benefit from our stories. My driver’s story also highlighted the importance of events like the Coalition for Hemophilia B Symposium, which brings individuals and families together to share, learn, and support one another.
The coalition’s travel scholarships include:
Apply online. The deadline to apply for a 2025 travel scholarship is Jan. 7. Don’t miss this opportunity to join a community dedicated to learning, advocacy, and support.
Your presence at the symposium could make a meaningful difference — for yourself, your loved ones, and others in the hemophilia B community. Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive future. I hope to see you there!
