The Stockholm Center for Global Asia at Stockholm University invites researchers in the social sciences from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia to apply for the Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia Research Stipend 2026. This stipend provides a unique opportunity for scholars to conduct research in residence at the Center for one to three months, with stays available during two periods in 2026: April–June or September–November.
About the Stipend:
The Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia Research Stipend was established through a donation from the former Association Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia (Föreningen Vietnam, Laos, Kambodja), a non-partisan organization dedicated to solidarity and support for the peoples of these countries. The purpose of the stipend is to promote scholarly work that advances understanding of development, democracy, and human rights in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia, or through comparative studies involving any of these countries.
The stipend supports research that is grounded in the social sciences and is focused on one or more of the following themes:
- Development, democracy, and human rights in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia
- Comparative studies involving at least one of the three countries
Who Can Apply:
This stipend is open to researchers from universities or research institutions in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia. Applicants may be at any stage of their academic career, but must be conducting research relevant to the stipend’s aims. Applications are encouraged from scholars engaged in research on development, democracy, human rights, or related fields in the context of the three countries.
Deadline and Research Periods:
- Deadline for applications: 12 December 2025
- Spring 2026: April – June
- Autumn 2026: September – November
Benefits of the Stipend:
- Return airfare to and from Stockholm
- Accommodation in Stockholm
- A contribution towards living expenses (depending on the length of stay)
Expectations for Stipend Recipients:
- Residency at the Stockholm Center for Global Asia for the duration of the stipend
- Active participation in the Center’s seminars, academic activities, and public events
- Presentation of research findings in a seminar organized by the Center
Application Requirements:
Applications must be submitted in English and should include:
- A research proposal (max. 2,000 words) outlining the objectives, methods, framework, and relevance of the research.
- A Curriculum Vitae (max. 3 pages).
- A letter of institutional affiliation confirming the applicant’s employment or position at a university or research institution in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia.
- Indication of the preferred research period (April–June or September–November 2026).
Selection and Notification:
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee based on:
- Academic merit
- Relevance to the goals of the stipend
- Feasibility of the proposed research
Applicants will be notified of the results by January 2026.
About the Donor:
The Association Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia (Föreningen Vietnam, Laos, Kambodja) was a solidarity organization dedicated to promoting knowledge about political, economic, social, and cultural developments in these countries. Following its dissolution in 2022, the Association donated its remaining funds to the Stockholm Center for Global Asia, continuing its legacy of supporting research on the development, democracy, and human rights of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
