The Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) Board of Directors is inviting applications for its 2026 Board of Directors Mentorship Program. This initiative is designed for dedicated young human rights activists who seek to deepen their understanding of nonprofit governance, organizational leadership, and strategic decision-making within a major human rights organization. Through a structured, two-way learning exchange with current Board members, participants will gain firsthand exposure to AIUSA’s governance processes and leadership responsibilities. By the end of the program, interested participants may consider applying to run for the AIUSA Board of Directors.
Program Structure
Selected participants will take part in a series of virtual and in-person activities throughout early 2026. These include:
- A virtual kickoff meeting on January 28, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. (Eastern)
- A virtual leadership and teamwork training on February 4, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. (Eastern)
- Attendance at two quarterly AIUSA Board meetings, including:
- An in-person gathering in Washington, D.C. from March 4–8, 2026
- Participation in select sessions during the June 5–7, 2026 Board meeting
- Participation in two Board committee meetings, based on interest and scheduling availability
- A meeting with a member of the AIUSA Executive Team
- One-on-one mentorship sessions with assigned Board partners
- Engagement in broader AIUSA governance processes and organizational learning
Participants will also be asked to rank their preferred areas of Board work when applying, choosing among:
- Audit
- Finance
- Governance
- International Governance
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be youth human rights advocates born between September 1, 2002, and January 31, 2008
- Demonstrate an interest in human rights leadership and governance
- Be available for both virtual and in-person commitments
Submissions will be accepted until December 15, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern).
Time Commitment
Participants must agree to the time requirements outlined in the program description. The approximate commitment includes:
- About 10 hours of virtual engagement
- Five days of in-person meetings in Washington, D.C. from March 4–8, 2026
- Additional virtual sessions on January 28, February 4, and selected portions of the June 5–7 Board meeting
