The African Creativity Beyond Borders Prize Programme is now inviting applications for four fully funded PhD scholarships commencing in October 2026. These prestigious studentships support innovative, interdisciplinary research rooted in African creativity, culture, and impact—both within the UK and internationally. One of the four scholarships may be awarded to an international applicant.

This programme nurtures future scholars, practitioners, and policy leaders committed to transforming understandings of African creative practice and generating meaningful societal impact.


Who Should Apply

We welcome applications from individuals with:

  • Academic backgrounds in arts, humanities, creative practice, social sciences, policy or development studies
  • Passion for African creativity—its global influence, challenges, and opportunities
  • Interest in equality, diversity, inclusion, and intercultural dialogue
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary and impact-driven research
  • Motivation to engage with policy, practice, and creative communities

We especially encourage applications from candidates who identify as Black / Mixed Black and/or have diasporic or heritage roots in Africa.


Funding Package (4 years)

  • Full tuition fees
  • Annual UKRI stipend (£22,780 for 2025/26, incl. London weighting)
  • Research training and development funding
  • Conference and workshop opportunities

Important Information for International Applicants

  • Only 1 of the 4 scholarships can be offered to an international student.
  • Visa application fees and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) are not covered (currently £776 per year for study duration).
  • Applicants must independently apply for a UK Student Visa if selected.

  • Dissertation title and mark (MA/MSc)
  • Contact details for two academic referees

2. Personal Statement

Up to 4,000 characters. Upload or enter directly into the online form.

3. Research Proposal (max 1,500 words, excluding references)

Your proposal should include:

  • Title
  • Introduction and research question(s)
  • Research context & literature
  • Methodology and ethical considerations
  • Proposed timeline for 4 years
  • Conclusion describing potential academic and societal impact
  • Why King’s College London and this programme?
  • References list

4. Academic Transcripts & Certificates

Originals plus official English translations (if applicable).

5. Academic Reference

Your referee must submit via the King’s Referee Portal using an official institutional email. Personal email providers (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) cannot be accepted.


Next Steps

Applicants who meet the deadline will be considered for funding. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with members of the African Creativity Beyond Borders team and prospective supervisors.
