LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) — The application window to apply for Calling Out the Called scholarships has been open less than a month, but already 103 applications have been submitted.
“The Kentucky Baptist Convention desires to come alongside current and future Kentucky Baptist ministers to help them pursue theological education,” said Michael Cabell, assistant to the executive director for convention relations. The scholarship program, which was enhanced by Todd Gray, KBC executive director, three years ago, provides scholarship help for ministry students attending Boyce College, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Clear Creek Baptist Bible College.
“We exist to serve Kentucky Baptist churches and one way we do that is by investing in the theological education of the current and future ministers of Kentucky Baptist churches,” Cabell noted.
“If you are called to ministry and desire theological education, we want you to know that you are not alone in this journey. The KBC desires to invest in your development by easing some of the burden you may experience paying for Bible college or seminary.”
The application deadline in April 15. A six-person committee, chaired by Norm Brock, then reviews the applications and awards scholarships. Recipients will be notified by May 31.
In the event applicants exceed the number of scholarships available, they will be awarded in the order that applications are received. Scholarships are awarded to as many full-time and part-time students as possible. Scholarships provide $50 per credit hour. “We want to provide as many as possible,” Cabell noted. The scholarships are for one academic year (fall, winter and spring terms of 2025-26), and students are welcome to apply each year.

In addition, a donor is giving two $5,000 scholarships to Clear Creek students, and those applications will involve writing an essay. People receiving those scholarships will not receive a Calling Out the Called scholarship.
For the 2023-24 school year, 129 students received scholarships totaling $107,000. For 2024-25 there were 168 students who received $161,600 in scholarships.
Cabell noted that the scholarships are for future ministers — including areas such as pastors, youth, music, children and education.
“God continues to call men and women to answer His call and prepare for a life of Christian ministry,” Gray said. “Also, Kentucky Baptists take great pleasure in helping them do so. By God’s grace and providential design, Kentucky Baptists will have a hand in the preparation and ministry of all these future ministry leaders.”
