What Does the Fellowship Offer?

Successful applicants for the 2024-2025 academic year stand to gain a comprehensive award package of up to $10,000. This includes a stipend, all required reading materials, and support for travel and lodging to attend colloquia hosted by the Mercatus Center.

Qualifications for Application:

To be eligible for the James Buchanan Fellowship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  1. Have graduated within the last five years from a doctoral program.
  2. Hold an academic position at an accredited university and/or a research position with an organization dedicated to in-depth research in social sciences and other sciences.

About the Fellowship:

The James Buchanan Fellowship, spanning one year, is a competitive program designed to empower scholars in any discipline who have recently completed their doctoral programs. The fellowship aims to foster critical engagement with ideas in the political economy of Adam Smith, as well as the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy.

Moreover, James Buchanan Fellows will gain exposure to contemporary applications of these ideas, exploring questions in social sciences related to the dynamics and institutional underpinnings of economic, political, and social coordination.

Scholars meeting the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:

  1. Graduates from accredited PhD programs within the last 5 years of their year of participation in the fellowship program.
  2. Individuals holding academic positions at accredited universities and/or research positions with organizations dedicated to in-depth research in social sciences and other sciences.
  3. Scholars capable of committing to traveling for two weekends and one week for colloquia during the upcoming academic year.
  4. Those with research and/or teaching interests that would benefit from a deeper understanding of key writings in political economy.
