MILLER PLACE, NY — The Friends of St. Patrick have chosen Miller Place High School senior Ava Fedrich as the winner of its annual $1,000 scholarship.
The honor student and a varsity softball player hopes to attend Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT next year.
Fedrich, who is of Irish descent, is particularly intrigued by Dingle, a small port town in southwest Ireland in County Kerry, and hopes to study abroad at Sacred Heart’s satellite campus there.
In a statement, the Friends said it is “an honor” for them to award the scholarship “to such a fine young woman with a wonderful Irish-themed future.”
The scholarship winner is announced annually around the group’s Miller Place-Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This year it will kick off on March 16 starting at 1 p.m. A fundraising cocktail party will take place on March 8 at the Moose Lodge in Mount Sinai.
The community’s support will be greatly appreciated, the group said.
