About the Opportunity
Future Earth Coasts invites participants and expert contributors to join a new global online training series focused on just transitions in coastal regions. As the concept of just transitions expands beyond high-emission industries, this programme addresses the unique challenges faced by coastal communities—where livelihoods depend on natural resources and where climate solutions such as offshore renewables and coastal defences are increasingly located.
The series will explore how coastal societies worldwide are navigating climate action, sustainability, and social equity—ensuring that transitions do not deepen existing inequalities or create new ones.
Training Series Overview
The programme consists of six two-hour sessions, combining expert insights, guided discussions, and interactive group activities:
- Introduction to Just Transitions
- Coastal Protection
- Deltas
- Urban Coastal Environments
- Small Islands
- Synthesis and Application
By the end of the series, participants will:
- Gain a global overview of just transition challenges and solutions in coastal zones
- Learn from diverse case studies across regions and contexts
- Develop practical insights applicable to their own professional and geographic settings
Assessment:
There is no formal assessment. Participants will be invited to deliver a short presentation in the final session, reflecting on the opportunities and challenges for a just transition in their own coastal locality.
