The Office of Professor Mariana Mazzucato, based at UCL’s Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), is recruiting for two exciting roles to support high-profile, global research and policy programmes shaping debates on green industrial strategy, new economic thinking, public value, and state capacity.

About IIPP & Mariana’s Office

IIPP brings together academic research, teaching, and policy practice to rethink the role of the state in driving innovation-led, inclusive, and sustainable growth. Led by Professor Mariana Mazzucato, the Institute challenges traditional economic thinking and works with governments and institutions worldwide to design mission-oriented public policies that actively shape and co-create markets.


Role 1: Programme Manager (Operations)

Salary: £54,931 – £64,644
Grade: Senior professional role

Role Overview

The Programme Manager will lead operational delivery across a complex portfolio of multi-year research and policy projects. Working closely with Professor Mazzucato, this role oversees cross-functional teams, strengthens systems and processes, and supports strategic decision-making across the Office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead operational delivery across high-impact research and policy programmes
  • Develop and implement robust project, grant, and operational systems
  • Manage and coordinate a cross-functional team to ensure operational excellence
  • Support financial oversight, grant management, reporting, and proposal development
  • Act as a key interface with senior stakeholders, funders, and partners
  • Enable high-impact delivery through strategic planning and operational leadership

Ideal Candidate

You will be a strategic, solutions-focused leader with strong programme and project management experience, excellent organisational judgement, and the confidence to operate in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. You will bring experience in financial and grant management, team leadership, and senior stakeholder engagement, alongside a strong commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.


Role 2: Project Coordinator

Role Overview

The Project Coordinator will support the day-to-day delivery of high-profile research and policy projects, working closely with the Programme Manager and wider team. This role is ideal for an organised and proactive project professional keen to contribute to global policy debates and cutting-edge economic thinking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate multiple project workstreams and maintain project plans and trackers
  • Support cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder engagement
  • Assist with communications, events, workshops, and international engagements
  • Monitor timelines, risks, and delivery quality
  • Support budget tracking, funder reporting, and financial planning
  • Contribute to high-quality outputs aligned with IIPP’s mission and themes

Ideal Candidate

You will be a detail-oriented, collaborative project professional with strong organisational skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will have experience coordinating people and workflows, supporting events and communications, and contributing to project delivery in a dynamic environment.
