Japan-Africa Exchange Program

The Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Program started in 2018 under an agreement between the Canon Foundation in Europe (CFE) and Kyoto University (KU). The program provides fellowships for researchers in African Studies. It supports KU fellows conducting research in Africa and scholars from KU’s partner institutes in Africa conducting research in Kyoto. Fellowships range from three months to one year between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025.

Eligibility

To apply for the program, you must have at least an MA degree and be employed at either KU or KU’s partner institutions as a post-doctoral fellow or faculty member.
African applicants can apply if they provide a reference letter from their prospective host at Kyoto University and demonstrate their existing partnerships.

Stipend and Travel Expenses

Successful applicants will receive financial support ranging from 22,500 to 27,500 Euro per year, which will be adjusted for different time periods.
The Canon Foundation in Europe (CFE) will handle the payments and provide detailed payment instructions to each successful applicant.

How to Apply

 As part of the application procedure, you will be asked to upload the following:

  • Your research plan including an estimate of total costs(maximum 1 A4 sheet-2 sides)*
  • a confirmation from your host institute that research or work facilities will be made available to you
  • 2 reference letters from 2 persons who are in a position to comment on your academic or professional qualifications and on your previous work.
  • Your Curriculum Vitae*
  • 1 copy of your doctoral certificate or your highest academic degree or professional qualification obtained*
  • 1 passport size photograph of yourself*
  • 1 list of your academic publications or professional achievements in chronological order containing information on all authors, place and year of publication and page references.

Please highlight the titles of the reprints or abridged versions enclosed.
