VICKSBURG, Miss. — The United Way of West Central Mississippi awarded $1,600 in scholarships at its annual meeting Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Levee Street Warehouse.
“The United Way of West Central Mississippi is proud to invest in our community by offering four scholarships to local high school seniors who believe in volunteering their time,” said Ali Hopson, parent liaison for Teens United.
The Bruce Alan Ebersole, Jr. Memorial Scholarship recognizes three students for their dedication to community service and volunteerism.
Lauren Johnae-Marie Flagg was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Bruce Alan Ebersole, Jr. Memorial. Flagg, the daughter of Rholndilyn Nix, is a graduate of Vicksburg High School. She plans to attend Southern University and major in mass communication.
Tatum Carol Watts, daughter of Mark and Neeli Watts, and Ryan Hadley Grey, daughter of Zachary and Jennifer Grey, each received a $300 scholarship from the Bruce Alan Ebersole, Jr. Memorial.
Taliyah Dashae Curry, daughter of Tameka Ross-McDaniel and Wally Curry Sr., was the $500 scholarship recipient of the Tre’Vion Jayden Gray Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to one local student dedicated to bettering the community through mentorship.
“Through mentoring, Taliyah learned the importance of consistency and motivation as it plays a crucial role in developing a child’s confidence,” Hopson said. “She saw how celebrating their small successes motivated her students to try harder. She also believes the joy of seeing a student understand a concept they once found difficult reminds her why helping others matters.”
