Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ foundation is partnering with another local nonprofit to provide early childhood education scholarships to families in need.
Systems of Care Initiative, or SOCI, and the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation joined forces to present 10 early education scholarships to Kansas City children.
The 15 and the Mahomies Foundation is fully funding five of the 10 scholarships, as well as helping fund an expansion of SOCI’s parent program.
Leaders from both groups and scholarship recipients attended a celebration Feb. 25 at the Open Minds Child Development Center in Olathe, Kansas.
More than 30% of a low-income family’s income is spent on child care, on average, in Missouri, according to the news release from SOCI and 15 and the Mahomies. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says that affordable child care should be no more than 7% of a family’s income.
15 and the Mahomies was founded in 2019 and focuses on helping children. It hosts programs like “Read for 15” and “Volunteer for 15,” which encourage children to develop a love for reading and volunteerism.
SOCI works year-round to improve access to early education opportunities for low-income families and support learning centers.
