The Southern Education Foundation (SEF) is proud to open applications for the SEF Research Fellows Program, a dynamic opportunity for early- to mid-career scholars dedicated to advancing education justice across the American South.
Through applied research, collaboration, and strategic support, SEF Research Fellows help build a more equitable and inclusive education system—one that expands opportunity for all students, especially those from historically marginalized communities.
About the Program
SEF Research Fellows partner closely with SEF staff and external experts to conduct rigorous, actionable research that informs policy and practice. Fellows investigate critical issues shaping education across the South, including:

Early learning

Workforce development & pathways
Designed to connect scholarship with real-world impact, the program amplifies research findings through SEF publications, policy briefs, events, and digital platforms. Fellows also gain access to SEF’s extensive research, advocacy, and partner network.
Who Should Apply?
Ideal applicants include:

Doctoral candidates (ABD) or postdoctoral researchers in education, public policy, sociology, economics, or related fields

Early- to mid-career researchers in academia, nonprofits, think tanks, or policy organizations

Scholars with a demonstrated commitment to improving education outcomes in the South

Applicants from HBCUs and MSIs are strongly encouraged to apply
