The awards, which are given to students completing the club’s Senior My Action Plan (MAP) program, recognize the hard work and dedication of the recipients, said youth programs manager Mario Circelli.
“We provide all kinds of supports to students to make sure that they succeed in high school through the program,” he said. “You really get to know the students.”
Participating students collect MAP points to become eligible for scholarships, Circelli said. Students are eligible for up to $4,000 each if they participate in the program all four years of high school.

While the scholarships aren’t a full-ride to college or university, they’re still significant in the lives of students, he said. “It means students may have to incur less student debt,” Circelli said.
Alexandra Koch-Denomme was one of the 15 scholarship recipients honoured Saturday. She received approximately $4,000 as the recipient of the Best Buy Scholarship.
Koch-Denomme, who is completing high school at Clarke Road secondary school, is applying to Western University affiliate King’s University College and wants to study social work, social sciences or child and youth studies. She has her sights set on becoming a kindergarten teacher.
“I’d like to stay local,” she said. “This is a huge thing for me. It takes a bit of the burden off when applying for school.”
Koch-Denomme has been going to the Boys and Girls Club of London since she was seven years old and later worked at the organization.
“It was just an amazing thing growing up,” she said. “It opened so many doors for me. I was able to do so many things growing up that I might not have had the chance to do if I hadn’t attended the programs.”
Recent high school graduate Sunaina Srikanth, who is studying nursing at Lambton College, received $3,000 through the Tom Whealy and BGC Canada Foundation scholarships.
Srikanth was introduced to the Boys and Girls Club of London by a high school friend and initially went for its tutoring and education programs. She wants to pursue pediatric nursing in the future.
“I’m just so very grateful. If I wasn’t a part of Boys and Girls, I would have never had this opportunity. I wouldn’t be where I am now,” she said.
