The Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Neuroscience (SENC) and the Portuguese Society for Neuroscience (SPN), is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the Early Career Training Programme (ECTP). This initiative is supported by FENS and the IBRO Pan European Regional Committee (PERC).
The programme is designed to provide Early Career Researchers (ECRs) with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in host laboratories in Spain or Portugal in the weeks leading up to the FENS Forum 2026 in Barcelona.
Programme Overview
- Duration: 2–3 weeks in a host laboratory in Spain or Portugal.
- Activities include:
- Short research projects tailored to the applicant’s interests.
- Opportunities to learn and practice new laboratory techniques.
- Networking with researchers at different career stages.
- Financial support:
- Selected applicants will receive a EUR 1000 stipend.
- The stipend is intended to cover travel within the host country and other visit-related expenses.
This programme is not only a chance to expand technical skills but also a way to build professional networks and strengthen collaborations across Europe.
Deadline
- Application deadline: 27 January 2026 Applicants are strongly encouraged to prepare their documents early to ensure timely submission.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be Early Career Researchers. The following categories are eligible:
- Postgraduate students:
- MSc, MD, PhD candidates, or assistants/trainees in clinical sciences.
- Proof of enrolment is required (official letter or enrolment form).
- Researchers within five years of completing their highest degree:
- Degrees include BSc, MSc, MD, PhD, or other professional doctorates.
- Clinical psychologists: within five years of starting professional work.
- Proof required: diploma copy/photo or official letter.
- The five-year eligibility period may be extended for maternity leave or other justified absences.
- Geographic restrictions:
- Applicants must not currently be working in a laboratory in Spain or Portugal.
- Spanish or Portuguese citizens may apply if they have been working abroad for at least 18 months.
- Additional requirements:
- Applicants must be registered to attend the FENS Forum 2026.
- Applicants must have submitted a first-author abstract to the Forum.
- Only one stipend per year is allowed (either a FENS Forum travel grant or an ECTP stipend).

- Enrolment document or diploma copy/photo.
- Applicant name, institution name, and enrolment/graduation date must be indicated.
- First-author abstract submitted to the FENS Forum 2026.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV):
- Maximum of 2 pages.
- Should include:
- Education and degrees earned.
- Current research projects and techniques.
- Publications, abstracts, and presentations.
- Any other relevant information.
- Recommendation letter:
- Written by the current supervisor.
- Must include name, affiliation, and contact details.
- Maximum length: 250 words.
