Human Rights Watch (HRW), one of the world’s leading international human rights organizations, is inviting applications for the Kenneth Roth Practitioner-In-Residence position. Named after HRW’s longest-serving Executive Director, this prestigious mid-career opportunity is designed to support an emerging leader in the global human rights movement.
The role will place the selected practitioner within either HRW’s Program (research and investigations) or Advocacy departments, working closely on a high-priority project aligned with their expertise.
This residency offers a unique platform to conduct impactful human rights work, influence policy, collaborate with global experts, and drive change across regions and thematic areas.
Location: Multiple locations (Global South preferred; remote option available)
Contract Type: Full-time, Fixed-Term (1 year)
Salary: USD 80,000–88,000 (varies by location)

Who Can Apply?
The position is open to mid-career human rights practitioners worldwide, with a preference for candidates based in the Global South, but all locations where HRW can hire will be considered.
Ideal candidates will have:

At least five years of human rights research or advocacy experience

A track record of delivering human rights impact

Demonstrated expertise in a thematic or country-specific human rights area

Strong communication, analytical and strategic thinking skills

Experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders

Proficiency in English (additional languages are an asset)

Key Responsibilities
The Practitioner-in-Residence will:

Conduct research, monitor, and document human rights violations
-
Develop advocacy strategies at local, regional, and international levels

Prepare reports, briefing papers, op-eds, and submissions to global bodies

Work with HRW’s media team on audiovisual and communications outputs

Engage with governments, NGOs, media, and intergovernmental agencies
-
Undertake domestic or international travel for research or advocacy missions

Collaborate with HRW teams across multiple countries
-
Lead a project aligned with HRW’s global strategic goals
