Ten high school seniors were recently awarded scholarships by Appalachian Wireless to help them excel in their next level of high school.
Scholarships totaling $11,00 were given to seniors at nine high schools in the Appalachian Wireless service area.
Olivia F. Messer of Clay County High School was the recipient of a $2,000 scholarship, while nine other students were awarded $1,000 scholarships, including Maken R. Justice, Belfry High School; Grace M. Caldwell, Martin County High School; Maddison H. Napier, Letcher County Central High School; Kassidy M. Sturgill, Hazard High School; Madison M. Little, Letcher County Central High School; Richard C. Yonts, Jenkins Independent High School; Kylie D. Noe, Harlan High School; and Abrielle G. Sherman and Ashton G. Evans, both of Harlan County High School.
“Education is the foundation for a stronger Appalachia,” Appalachian Wireless Marketing Manager Kristin Mulcahy said. “By easing the financial burden for these students, we’re investing in future leaders who will carry our region forward.”
The Appalachian Wireless Scholarship Program, now in its 19th year, recognizes academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement. Eligibility is limited to students who are either Appalachian Wireless customers or whose parent or guardian has been a customer for at least the past 12 months.
Students apply by filling out an application, submitting an essay, and undergoing a thorough review process conducted by a scholarship board that determines which candidates best exemplify the values and promise that Appalachian Wireless seeks to support.
“We truly wish we could give every student a little something; that’s always the hope,” Mulcahy said. “Our goal is to provide more resources to our educators, school systems, and students, helping them prepare and advance these young people to the next level. These 10 students are just a few of the best who rose to the top of our scholarship criteria.”
She said the scholarship program is one of the “most meaningful ways we can give back.”
“It’s about more than financial support — it’s about showing our young people that we believe in them, their potential, and the future they’re building right here in Appalachia,” Mulcahy said.
The Appalachian Wireless service area in Kentucky includes Bell, Breathitt, Clay, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Harlan, Jackson, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Martin, Magoffin, Morgan, Perry, Pike, Powell, Owsley, Whitney and Wolfe counties.
The company also provides service in Buchanan and Dickenson counties in Virginia.
