LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – 10 students received a $2,500 scholarship from the Justice League of Greater Lansing, Michigan to help them get through college on Saturday.
The Justice League gave out the scholarships to the top 10 students who competed in a 500-word essay contest, examining how they’ve been affected by America’s racial wealth gap or generational wealth.
Prince Jerpld Solace, who’s the president of the Justice League of Greater Lansing, Michigan talked about the importance of this contest.
“When we look at the legacy of slavery and we look more specifically at the 100,000 African-Americans living in the Great Lansing region, we see that there’s a huge disparity in wealth,” said Solace. […] “It’s important that we are mindful that slavery and its aftermath has had an impact on the descendants of enslaved African-Americans in the Great Lansing Region. So, we want to do something about it.”
