Shannon Andersen, president of Ute Pass Kiwanis, hands a check for $1,500 to Sheriff Jason Mikesell for the nonprofit Teller County Honorary Deputy Sheriff’s Association, which sponsors Shop with a Hero for kids at Christmas time.
A long-standing tradition, the Ute Pass Woodland Park Kiwanis Crabby Tax Night, gives permission to complain, a little anyway, but mostly to have fun — and donate.
The local Kiwanians are dedicated to raising money for projects that help kids. Breakfast with Santa, for instance, attracts up to 1,000 children and parents on the first Saturday in December. “We have arts, crafts, free toys and a picture with Santa,” said Shannon Andersen, Kiwanis president.
Along with the holiday cheer with Santa Claus, the all-you-can-eat crab night, Kiwanis spreads the message with another popular fundraiser, Taste of the Grape.
“The money we’re raising goes toward scholarships for high school students who live in Teller County,” Andersen said.
Kiwanis awards scholarships for students attending universities or trade schools. “Last year we gave a scholarship to a young lady who was going to go through flight training; she wanted to get a pilot’s license,” Andersen said.
Kiwanis has added a charitable component to its fundraising efforts, beginning with raising $20,000 for other nonprofits, the result of raffling an ATV. “The only requirement is that the organization has to benefit kids,” she said.
The 21 recipients included the culinary class at Woodland Park High School, Merit Academy Shooting Club, Colorado Phoenix Project, Jr. Achievement, Woodland Park Hockey Association, Takedown Wrestling, the Aspen Mine Center (during Christmas season), Shop with a Hero, the Community Cupboard and Little Chapel Food Pantry.
“This year we are committed to doing $15,000 in scholarships and $15,000 in grants to other organizations,” Andersen said.
To fund this year’s projects, Kiwanis sponsors a raffle with cash prizes. Tickets are $100 apiece for a chance at $10,000, $1,000 or $500, first, second and third, respectively. “We are only selling 300 tickets,” Andersen said. “All of the money goes for kids in Teller County.”
Raffle tickets are available at Andersen Enterprises at 750 E. U.S. Hwy. 24 or from a local Kiwanian. The drawing time is 7:30 p.m. April 24 at Shining Mountain Golf Club. The winner need not be present to win. For information, email: utepasskiwanisec@gmail.com.
