Pursuing higher education can be a costly endeavor for young people across the state of Louisiana. With scholarships and sponsorships aimed at encouraging academic excellence and leadership skills, local employer and manufacturer Cornerstone Chemical Company, LLC is working to bridge the gap between bright minds and access to affordable instruction.
Giving back to the community, no matter the initiative, is at the forefront of Cornerstone’s operations. Among their many community programs, the Cornerstone Scholarship Program, for the past five years, has uplifted and invested in the next generation of STEM workers. Every spring, $1,000 scholarships are awarded to students who plan to or are already pursuing STEM-related degrees at accredited universities or community colleges in Louisiana.
Eligible applicants include graduating high school seniors, and undergraduate and graduate students. To ensure scholarship recipients are representative of the community, students must be residents of the Third District of Jefferson Parish or children of Cornerstone employees. For community scholarships, priority is given to applicants in Cornerstone’s nearby communities of Waggaman, Kennedy Heights in Avondale, and Old Kenner.
Local community leaders make up the Scholarship Selection Committee and anonymously select recipients for the scholarship. Winning students demonstrate strong academic achievement as well as high levels of involvement in their schools and community.
“Having displayed not only academic achievement but also a willingness to get involved and improve their communities, these scholarship recipients are the future of our community,” said JoLena Broussard, manager of strategic engagement and communications at Cornerstone. “We’re glad to help connect these students to opportunities where they can excel.”

Cornerstone also awarded scholarships to three high school students selected to attend the 2024 Louisiana Youth Seminar this summer at LSU. The week-long program aims to develop effective leaders who show promise in moving Louisiana forward. The program is aligned with Cornerstone’s values of corporate citizenship and always striving to make local communities better places to live and work.
The scholarship includes $1000 program tuition, housing, meals, supplies, and more. Preference is given to students attending Cornerstone’s adopted school, Joseph A. Cuillier Career Center.
Cornerstone’s three LYS Scholarship recipients will travel to LSU in Baton Rouge to attend the program from July 14-19 to develop their core leadership skills, such as effective communication, problem-solving, public speaking, working with others, and foster strong values and character.

Especially since “people power” is what fuels progress and innovation, Cornerstone seizes such opportunities to invest in Louisiana youth and remove economic and logistical barriers that exist for students who could benefit from the LYS program.
“These scholarship programs aim to uplift local students, remove barriers to education and help further their personal and professional development,” said Broussard regarding both the LYS sponsorship and Cornerstone scholarship programs. “We invest in leadership and educational programs, especially science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, to inspire learning and help bolster our community’s future workforce.”
