ELKO — Twelve seniors from Elko High School and two from Wells High School each received $1,000 Burger King Foundation scholarships this year, the company’s local franchisee said.
HB Boys L.C., a management company based in Sandy, Utah, operates Burger King franchises in Northeastern Nevada and elsewhere. It worked with Burger King Foundation to award the students.
Yanira Garcia, who plans to use her scholarship to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno, said she felt honored to receive a national scholarship, as someone from a small town and a small school. Garcia said she hopes to attend law school afterwards.
Allyta Ross will attend Montana State University in Bozeman to pursue a career in pediatric nursing.
Ryan Rushton will study political science at UNR, with the goal of working a government job.
Yuliana Mendez-Barajas plans to attend Great Basin College and then transfer to Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.
Bianca Luna plans to get a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Great Basin College so she can become an elementary school teacher.
Nevaeh Quiroz plans to attend nursing school in Cedar City, Utah.
Megan Nicholls will gain an associate degree in science from GBC and then transfer to Utah Valley University to study forensic science.
“It’s a little scary, going from a small town where everyone knows everybody into a bigger city like Reno,” Garcia said. “Even though it’s still familiar, it’s still going to be scary to just be on my own. But I’m excited to have a chance to make something of myself.”
Mendez-Barajas will be a first-generation college student.
“This is a really great privilege, because my parents didn’t go to college, neither did they graduate from college,” Mendez-Barajas said. “For me, being a first-generation student, I think it’s a really great opportunity.”
Quiroz, too, will be the family’s first in college.
“I feel really lucky to be experiencing this in the first place,” Quiroz said. “It’s definitely a humongous opportunity to be going somewhere different and getting to experience the things that my parents, grandparents and many generations, haven’t gotten to experience.”
Others receiving the Burger King scholarships from Elko High School include Francia Gutierrez Contreras, Jairo Ortiz, Lilianna Haynes, Kyara Hernandez Duarte and Jesus Cortez.
Scholarship recipients from Wells High School include Cesar Berumen and Ethan Elton.
