Nineteen students from Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) were awarded $12,000 scholarships on Monday in recognition of their accomplishments in academics, leadership, and community involvement throughout high school.

“This opportunity is wonderful in the case that it’s recognition. You know, for the four years we’ve been here at each of our schools, we do a lot of things to make sure we are good candidates for colleges,” said Muhilan Balasubramanian, a senior at Ballard High School.
For students like Aaron Ta, a senior at Doss High School, the scholarship not only eases the financial burden but also provides hope for the future.
“Having a tremendous opportunity like this and the scholarship like this definitely gives me more peace of mind when it comes to paying for college and just having a better future for myself,” Ta said.
Ta also credited his participation in the “YALL Program” during his junior year for preparing him for this achievement.
WLKY partnered with the Louisville Mayor’s Office for the initiative which encourages students to engage with the Louisville community, and five of the scholarship recipients participated in the program.
“It really put me out there more and gave me more opportunities to talk to different people. We had this kind of opening event where I got to talk with just like 50 other students, and I think it helped me realize I can jump at more opportunities than I thought,” said Shelby Geraghty, a senior at James Graham Brown High School.
More than $3.5 million has been awarded to nearly 400 students since the start of the scholarship.
