NEW HAVEN, CT — The National Merit Scholarship Program has announced this year’s $2,500 scholarship winners, including two New Haven students.
The 2,500 winners were chosen from a pool of 15,000 finalists. The awards were selected based on an evaluation of their accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in college.
Kathleen Driscoll, who attends the Hopkins School in New Haven and has a probable career field of engineering, was named a scholarship winner.
Nathaniel B. Huang, who also attends Hopkins School in New Haven, was named a scholarship winner.
A committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors selected the winners.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation funds the single-payment $2,500 scholarships.
This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2023 when high school juniors took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named semifinalists on a state-representational basis.
More than 16,000 semifinalists had an opportunity to continue in the competition.
