Ontario youth can take advantage of their hard work with scholarships and bursaries from numerous Ontario farm groups.
Here is a partial list of some of the scholarships available for Ontario ag students organized by application deadlines.
March
4-H Canada: The national organization plans to award 33 individuals with sums ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 each through four scholarship programs. The application period is from March to the end of May. Website:4-h-canada.ca/GrantsScholarshipsandAwards

Angelo and Frank Agro Undergraduate Scholarship: Seven awards of $7,000 (payable over four years of study) at the University of Guelph for those who have been involved in 4-H. Applicants must submit a point-form listing of 4-H activities along with a reference letter from a 4-H club official. Application deadline: April 15. Canadian Agri-Business Education Foundation: One $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to one Ontario student entering or currently pursuing an agricultural related program full-time at a Canadian college, university or apprenticeship (trade) institution. Applicants will be assessed on a combination of their leadership attributes as well as a written or video response to the question: “Name a challenge that you think agriculture can help solve. How will your future career in agriculture allow you to play a role in solving that program?” Application deadline: April 30. Website:cabef.org/
Masterfeeds: One $1,000 scholarship for a student aged 17 to 19 and studying agriculture within Canada. Must submit a 500-to-700-word essay about what has inspired the applicant to pursue a career in agriculture. Application deadline: April 30. Website: www.masterfeeds.com/future-agmasters/

Parrish and Heimbecker Scholarship: One $1,000 scholarship for a University of Guelph student who has demonstrated a commitment to the agricultural and food industry, measured by the approximate number of hours a student has dedicated per week to work and/or extracurricular and/or volunteer activities related to the agricultural and food industry during their Undergraduate degree. Ontario Joint Dairy Breeds Future Leaders Scholarship: Two scholarships, each valued at $1,000, will be awarded to applicants enrolled in a post-secondary agricultural or dairy apprenticeship program who have successfully completed at least the first year of that program and are enrolled in the following year. Apply by May 15.

Keith Gilmore Foundation: Two $10,000 scholarships are available for applicants in advanced studies leading to a career in the beef industry. Areas of study are broadly defined but include animal science, range management, forage and feeding, genetics, communications and business. Bayer Fund Opportunity Scholarship: Up to 65 $1,500 scholarships will go to graduating high school students who are planning to enroll at a Canadian post-secondary institution in a first-year agriculture, food science, or culinary program. Applicants must provide two references, a reference letter, a high school transcript, a 300-500 word application essay. Awardees must present a university/college acceptance letter before receiving the funds but may apply before they are accepted at such institution. Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund: Eight scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to students enrolled at a college or university in a diploma or degree program. Applicants are judged based on 4-H involvement, junior farmer involvement, community activities and future goals. Youth from all six dairy breeds are eligible. Students must have completed their first year at either a university or college and be enrolled for next year. Ottawa Valley Seed Growers Association: Up to four $2,500 scholarships to recognize interest, knowledge and achievement in the Eastern Ontario agricultural community for youth of Eastern Ontario enrolled in at least the second year of studies at any post-secondary college or university, and planning to pursue a career in agriculture. Nuffield Canada typically offers $15,000 for several Ontario farmers to travel the world to study agriculture. The travel is for a minimum of 10 weeks, six of which has to be consecutive. They’re looking for applicants ages 25 to 45, with at least five years’ experience in ag business or farming. Current-full time students do not qualify. Application deadline is usually the end of June. However, as of mid-March, the Nuffield website indicated the application process has been suspended, instead inviting those interested to join a mailing list. https://www.nuffield.ca/application
Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers Program: Two $1,000 scholarships, one for a high school student about to enter university, and the second for someone who has already done at least one year of post-secondary studies. St. Lawrence-Ottawa Valley district of the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario: Two $500 scholarships, open to the children and grandchildren of CFFO members, who belong to this District Christian Farmers Association. Contact the CFFO at info@christianfarmers.org or 1-855-800-0306.

Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario: Four $2,500 scholarships toward post-secondary agricultural training. Open to qualifying applicants who are secondary school graduates and whose parents or grandparents are CFFO members. Canadian Dairy Commission: Two awards of $20,000 available to University of Guelph students over three semesters to encourage and support dairy related graduate studies. Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association: A $10,000 soil health graduate scholarship in conjunction with the University of Guelph for graduate student research centring around soil management issues. Applicants must submit a two-page letter stating why their proposed research will advance soil health/management research for Ontario’s field crop agricultural sector. Application deadline: Aug. 15. Ontario Federation of Agriculture: Three bursaries allocated to individual students in three provincial regions (southwestern, central, and northern and Eastern Ontario). Bursary funds are raised through a silent auction at the OFA’s previous annual general meeting, so the amount available changes each year. (2020 was $2,000). Available for students of OFA families who are entering or currently pursuing a post-secondary education in an agriculture-related program. Deadline is anticipated to be the end of August. The Kemptville College Alumni will award two $500 Scholarships to students entering their second year in a college agricultural or food related program in Sept 2021. Preference given to students who have a relative who has graduated from Kemptville. Deadline to apply has been earlier in other years, Check website www.kcalumni.ca.
Jersey Canada: Typically awards three scholarships of $1,000 each to recognize outstanding interest, knowledge and achievement in the Jersey breed, as well as agriculture in general. Scholarships are available to those enrolled in at least the second year of study at any post-secondary College or University. Application deadline is usually Nov. 30. Ontario Sheep Farmers: A $500 undergraduate scholarship for those enrolled in a first or second-year post-secondary program. Applicants must be 21 years old or younger and be a registered sheep producer or have a parent/guardian registered with OSMA, or be a member of a 4-H Ontario sheep club. Canadian Total Excellence in Agricultural Management (CTEAM): A $4,500 scholarship is offered to a farmer who wants to learn more about detailed financial, marketing and human relations management skills that can be applied to the home farm. The course has four one-week courses over two years. The scholarship money can be used for tuition and travel. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. Application deadline is typically Sept. 15. Canadian Western Agribition: Series of scholarships from $1,500 to $2,500. Applicants must have participated at the Agribition and can be a Grade 12 student, post-secondary, or graduate student. Deadline: Oct. 1. Website: www.agribition.com/scholarships-awards/scholarships
Ontario Processing Vegetable Growers: Funding available from annual 50/50 draw for full-time students entering 2nd, 3rd, 4th or post graduate year of college or university, and whose studies demonstrate a connection to the vegetable industry.
