ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Each May, Law Day is recognized across the country to celebrate the important role that law plays in a free society.
The Muskingum County Bar Association honors the occasion annually by sponsoring an essay competition that awards its winners with college scholarships. Bishop Rosecrans Senior Owen Buxton won first place and explained the participation process as well as the essay’s theme.
“This was a scholarship that I found on the MCCF website and it was I enter my senior year of high school. I was interested in applying for a plethora of different scholarships and this is one that really struck out to me.” Buxton said. “And I’m very eager to pursue it and I wrote an essay about it, about ‘Voices of Democracy,’ basically. And the changing voices of democracy in the 21at century.”
Buxton, who plans to major in History at Muskingum University this fall was awarded $1,500 dollars for his effort. Third Place winner, Bishop Rosecrans Senior Brendan Bernath was awarded $500 dollars and plans to major in Computer Science this fall at the University of Notre Dame. He shared what this award means to him.
“Personally, I think that it kind of allowed me to go into a different topic, as I’m more of a math-science type of person. And it was… obviously Law Day. It’s more history, more political science and I think it allowed me to kind of pursue a different topic and it allowed me to show my talents in a different area. So that was nice,” Bernath said.
Maysville High School Senior Owen Lutz placed second and will receive $1,000 dollars for his effort. Lutz plans to major in Business at Ohio Dominican University this fall.
