Two outstanding high school students from Mississauga and Brampton have won “prestigious” scholarships worth a combined $220,000 to help with their post-secondary goals.
The money comes from the annual Schulich Leader Scholarships program, which gives out 50 engineering scholarships valued at $120,000 each and 50 science, technology or math scholarships valued at $100,000 each year.
Every high school in Canada can submit one nominee per academic year based on academic excellence in STEM, entrepreneurial leadership, and financial need, with two of the 2025 winners coming from Mississauga and Brampton.
Brampton Centennial Secondary School student Yash Sharma has been selected to receive an engineering scholarship worth $120,000, while Sean Zhang from The Woodlands Secondary School in Mississauga will receive a $120,000 engineering scholarship, the Peel District School Board says.
Sharma, who will be studying engineering at Western University in the fall, says the award shows his “resilience and perseverance…two of the most important things to have as a student, and leader.”
“I am incredibly thankful to be able to have such a strong support system, like my family, friends and teachers, and be able to learn every single day,” Sharma said in a release. “One day, I hope to make a change in my community and inspire others.”
The scholarships are funded by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich, with over $100 million in funding awarded since 2012, to encourage our best and brightest students,” and help support “the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded, technology innovators.”
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Yash and Sean on receiving this well-deserved recognition,” said Rashmi Swarup, Director of Education with the Peel District School Board. “These scholarships not only support students in pursuing their goals and passions but also play a vital role in shaping tomorrow’s leaders.”
