Jeff and Bonnie Magill established the annual Margery Magill Memorial Scholarship in honor of their late daughter, Margery Magill. The scholarship helps 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) members.
Margery Magill was active in 4-H and the FFA, raising four guide dog puppies for the blind, as well as numerous market goats. She was involved in many civic and local activities and events.
She graduated from Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts (MCAA) in Marysville and then later graduated from UC Davis. She also went on to recieve her master’s degree in international relations in London.
Her ideal career would have been one that would allow her to travel the world while she was getting paid. She was heading in that direction when she moved to Washington, D.C. It was her dream city to live and work in. There was so much to see and do.
However, in Washington, D.C., her life was unexpectedly cut short during a violent encounter. It was reported that Magill, then 27, was stabbed to death while walking a dog near her residence. Police described the attack as random and unmotivated, likely caused by the perpetrator’s mental illness.
After her passing, family and friends started donating money toward a memorial scholarship – the Margery Magill Memorial Scholarship was born.
For this year’s scholarship recipients, the highest-ever amount of money, $23,000, was split between them; applicants received different amounts, depending on their applications.
Most of the Margery Magill Memorial Scholarship recipients received their scholarships outside of the Appeal-Democrat’s office on Tuesday. Separately, Margery Magill MCAA Memorial Scholarship was presented for the first time at MCAA’s graduation.
