$2,500 scholarships available for southern Virginia health care students – The Danville Register and Bee

The deadline is closing in for Southern Virginia students wanting to go in the health field to apply for a $2,500 scholarship.
The money is being offered by Claude Moore Opportunities, which is a nonprofit focusing on health care work force development.
The deadline to apply is Tuesday.
There are three scholarships to help students in the region. It’s part of an effort to get more people involved in the health care industry, which is facing a shortage of workers.
It’s part of the Virginia Partnership for Health Science Careers, a statewide network of regional health care workforce development partnerships, including in Southern Virginia.
“Claude Moore’s years of experience in health care workforce development has taught us that cost can be a real barrier to pursuing the training and education needed for a good-paying career in healthcare,” said Bill Hazel, CEO of Claude Moore Opportunities and former Virginia secretary of health, wrote in a statement. “These flexible funds will support the educational and career journeys of students in Southern Virginia to ensure they stay on track and get the training, credentials, and certifications they need to make a good living and serve the healthcare needs of their community.”
Anyone interested in applying may visit www.cm-opportunities.org. Applications are due by midnight Tuesday.
To quality, a student needs to either be enrolled in or plan to enroll in a health care career training program.
The money can be used to cover the cost of the training program or for things like licensing/certification costs, a news release reported. The funds also may be put toward transportation, equipment or childcare.
