Recent Perquimans High graduates Catherine Howell, Maddux Thach and Will Rucker each received a $600 Bear Swamp/Beech Springs Ruritan Club Scholarship.
Howell, who was named an NC Park Scholar this spring, will attend N.C. State University. Howell is the first Perquimans High graduate to receive the prestigious scholarship, which was established more than 30 years ago, Of 2,550 applicants, Howell was selected as one of the 38 recipients and has been awarded a scholarship package of $121,000.
Thach has been accepted to the Nucor Academy at Shelton State Community College to study to become a mechanical engineer.
Rucker will attend College of The Albemarle or Nash Community College with plans to become an electrical lineman for Albemarle Electric Co-op.
The Bear Swamp/Beech Springs Ruritan Club Scholarship was first made available to Perquimans High seniors in 2024 through an endowment managed by the Perquimans County Schools Foundation.
For more than two decades, the Ruritan Club offered a scholarship established in memory of hometown hero and baseball great Jim ‘Catfish’ Hunter. In 2024, the Ruritan Club donated $50,000 to establish an endowment that will continue to offer the scholarship to local high school students.
Applicants must be residents of Perquimans County but can attend either Perquimans public schools or a a private school outside the county.
