Five Baltimore City high school students learned on Thursday that they’re heading to college for free.
McDaniel College is giving them full scholarships worth $200,000 each. With college tuition high, it’s a blessing to students and parents.
First up on the surprise tour was Douglass High School student Malver Canales, who is ranked second in his class.
Baltimore Polytechnic Institute senior Ace Foly Ehke received the news next. Ehke is a National Honor Society student and library volunteer.
“It’s great to know I have the opportunity to have my entire tuition just covered, because tuition is not cheap,” Ehke said. “Extremely expensive, so it’s good to know I have to weigh my options now.”
The students surprised Thursday are getting full scholarships for all four years, and it is all possible thanks to a partnership with the CollegeBound Foundation and McDaniel College.
“These are students who are not only academically excellent, but also give back to their community and school,” said Cheryl Knauer. “So, we really look for a well-rounded student that can be an ambassador when they come to campus.”
Western High School senior Skye Hammond plans to study nursing.
“This is an awesome opportunity, really helps me put forward my new steps in life,” Hammond said. “I don’t have to think that much about financials, I can fully focus on my future and education.”
The scholarships don’t include room and board or books, but school officials said financial aid should help with that.
