The eighth annual David and Dorothy Johnson Scholarships were recently awarded to five Pigeon Forge High School graduates on May 21.
Coral Powell, Osmar Lopez, Liberty Dill, Isabella Lunar-Lopez and Brandon Scholler received scholarships from the Green Door Trust. The Trust has been active in the community since 2013 working to fund students and organizations and promote “The Adventure of Education and the Education of Adventure.”
All of the scholarship recipients are hard-working, excellent students who are also school leaders, athletes and community volunteers. They all have clear goals and plans for their futures: Coral Powell will attend the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga to become a clinical psychologist. Osmar Lopez plans to study law at the University of Tennessee so he can help his community as a lawyer. Liberty Dill is pursuing a career in physical therapy at Tusculum University. Isabella Lunar-Lopez wants to help others by becoming a therapist. Brandon Scholler has a passion for creating and will become an animator.
David Johnson, a lifelong resident of Sevier County, was raised by a single mother during the Great Depression and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Unable to attend college himself, he believed strongly in education and sports. He worked for years to assist Pigeon Forge High School sports programs, especially the baseball and softball teams. His wife, Dorothy Sims Johnson, also a lifelong Sevier County resident, provided the unconditional love their children and grandchildren needed to succeed. She worked in hospitality for more than two decades and served her community for 10 years volunteering at LeConte Medical Center. She is also a Master Gardener. Twelve of their grandchildren have now graduated from Pigeon Forge High School.
When David Johnson died in 2016, the family wanted to pass along his spirit by helping PFHS graduates pursue their goals and live their dreams, so they created these scholarships.
“Our family has been so blessed, we want to honor David by helping Coral, Osmar, Liberty, Isabella and Brandon’s college dreams come true,” Dorothy Johnson said. “We are so proud of them.”
